I'm not well-versed in this matter but isn't there some sort of penalty (legal?) for a company making choices that are severely contrary to their shareholders' pockbooks? Explain this like I'm 5

Yup, though the annoying thing is precedent was established with Dodge v. Ford when Ford was trying to do more for workers and consumers of the product. Huge first step towards all the shrinkflation, lower quality (fridges last years not decades for example) etc. we see with corporations now.
