Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.
Rules for General Chat
-
Be respectful to each other. This is of utmost importance, and comments may be removed if deemed not respectful.
-
Avoid long drawn out arguments. This should be a place to relax, not to waste your time needlessly.
-
Personal anecdotes, puzzles, cute pics/clips - everything welcome
-
Please do not spam at the top level. If you have a lot to post each day, try and post them all together in one top level comment
-
Try keep things light. If you are bringing in deep stuff, try not to go overboard.
-
Things that are clearly on-topic for this board should be posted as a separate post and not here (except if you are new and still getting the feel of this place)
-
If you find people violating these rules, deport them rather than start a argument here.
-
Feel free to give feedback as these rules are expected to keep evoloving
In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way
I'm not expecting to grow flowers in the desert, but I can live and breathe and see the sun in wintertime.
You heard the part-acoustic Live Without a Safety Net disc? (2 versions, 1-disc more edited but honestly flows better, 2-disc less edited, more crowd singing etc.) The acoustic portion has some amazing versions, then of course the electric portion, man that band could really rip. Too bad they insisted on lefty politics rather than rocking which is why they were such a flash in the pan in 80s USA.
No, all I know is that one song of theirs, really. Kind of a one-hit-wonder, flash-in-the-pan band.
I recommend the album the Crossing and this live one. I'd get the single CD even though it's more aggressively edited due to the better flow/not getting bogged down. They have some really good other stuff early in their career (mainly from The Crossing) so if you like "In a Big Country" I seriously recommend checking them out a bit - not entire catalog as after early stuff they got lefty political bigly - more.
Big Country!! Now there's a blast from the past.
The Crossing is really an essential album for anyone that likes rock, in my opinion.
Cactus flowers seem really neat...
The only problem is they bloom once a year. In the spring time. Other than that, it’s just rocks, cactus, and more rocks, and more dust and more dirt. And then a couple more cactus. 🤷♀️ 100 + five months out of the year.
I've been out in dry Texas and Arizona, feels like zen gardens would be the way to go. Not having to cut lawns can be a real plus... Does astroturf melt out there?
Our entire yard is desert plants. Every single house here is like that. It’s so ugly. People move to Arizona and then they order more cactuses in dirt and rocks to be delivered to their front yard. 🤷♀️. There’s only one place that I put flowers and that’s around the palm tree. It’s like moving to the ocean side and ordering sand and having it delivered. 🤪
I’ve gotten rid of pretty much everything in the backyard, except for two trees and a bush. Also, cactus have sharp things all over them. So they’re not easily manageable. Basically, I’m not a fan of Arizona, but I have to live here. It is what it is for now.
I think more flowers bloom once a year than not though. Like only a couple things in my garden (which are pretty random) flower all summer. Most have a spurt in the spring, trees too.
Regular petunias will last through out the summer in nicer climates. Mine died last year May/June because it was too hot here for them. ☹️. So cal they would flourish- but AZ summers are brutal! But I understand the difference between annuals and perennials. 🫡
Oh they are if you aren't familiar. The desert botanical garden in Phoenix is AWESOME in blooming season (so, probably starting about now actually?).
Edit: It's actually still awesome when things aren't blooming. Just not all-caps awesome. Unlike say the Denver one which a dumbass chick I was dating briefly wanted to go to in winter - ok yes the inside part is still there but the outside...is not.
We haven’t got the bloom yet. But I’m hoping for a super bloom because we’ve had a lot of rain this winter. Last year we had a super bloom, and it was beautiful.
I would like to see Death Valley in a super bloom - that is supposed to be awesome - but of course you have to pay attention to catch one.
LOL at least she self-outted! My grandma was living at the Atacama desert edge one year that it rained. Imagine a solid carpet of violent, riotous color appearing overnight, as far as the eye could see...
Oh she was the one liberal I've tried to date who was otherwise MOSTLY USUALLY cool and super smart, so I decided to see if we could ignore politics. Well, sort of, other than of course she couldn't shut up about Orange Man Bad (this was 2017) so after a bit I informed her that I thought Obama was horrible and in fact very dangerous for the country so we should probably wait and see about Trump (I was still watching and gathering data - I was going OK he seems to be doing mostly right things, when he is not blocked - I voted for Johnson in that one actually btw). The look on her face was like she'd been hit from the side by a baseball. Edit: We carried on a bit after that but she couldn't take it when I told her she was stupid to let a grown kid walk all over her and she just couldn't take THAT. That was the end. At least our last night together, she cooked some fish thing, so I gassed her severely all night. She was like damn and I was like you cooked it.
jammin bagpipes!
