They do that because who in their right mind would storm the enemy lines knowing they could/would die? Obeying orders without question is the main goal they teach in boot camp. They also teach you that you don’t have to obey an unlawful order but in practice they are the ones that determine if it’s lawful or unlawful. At least that was the way it was in the 70’s when I was in.
You could ask why does the Army have ships when we have a Navy for that? Why do they have planes when we have an Air force for that? Maybe the Army should stick with ground combat, something they are supposed to be good at.
