I don't get this and never have. Why would anyone (god in this case) send their only child to certain death? Of course I have respectfully asked this question to religious people and they always say something like it was to save humanity. Wtf?
Jesus was Gods only begotten Son but He was more than that. He was the Father the Son and the Holy Spirit all in one. He came to teach humanity and give them a path to Salvation. He was the ultimate sacrificial Lamb. Before the Christ sacrificed Himself on the Cross there was no path to Heaven.
He in His ultimate wisdom and compassion gave humanity this gift.
This is actually a wonderful question to ask, since it is a perfect question to ask God, as you build a relationship with Him.
There's a wonderful Lenten retreat, called
Glimpses Along the Way of the Cross, that explores this very topic. When his students discussed this very same question, Bishop Shea says,* "the death of Christ on the cross, is the most tender and eloquent invitation possible to friendship with Him. There's no coercion, no guilt, no force. His hands are nailed to the cross. There's not even the force of argument - just His eyes, looking at us. And we find ourselves wanting Him in our lives."*
May God bless you on your journey. Never stop seeking Him.
Understanding comes with faith, prayer, and time. Inherent in this story is the presumption that the soul exists and does not die; the world is a crucible in which our souls can be purified; and Christ's life and death was an example of a pure soul demonstrating that the material world is immaterial to the spirit. There is more to it than that, but that is one part relevant to your comment.
GOD in all caps please! It was the only way to save Humanity or we wouldn't be around to this very day! Do you know how vile and sinful everything would be without LIGHT shinning in the darkness. GOD himself came down and lived among us to teach man his Love and Forgiveness. The only way to be saved is thru the CREATOR Himself JESUS CHRIST!
God cannot invalidate or ignore sin, the hurt of people matters to Him a lot as well. God is so Holy that sin burns up in His presence. The natural punishment for evil is eradication—death. All of humanity fell from grace, all rejected God’s wisdom and decided to judge good and evil for themselves and sinned. Our sin separated us from God and also meant we deserved destruction in a good and perfect world. However God loves His creation and wanted to restore the relationship and restore us to our perfect state—though it still needed to be our choice to commit to doing so. But justice must be paid for the sin. There some stuff in here about our “covenant” relationship-promise. Jesus is the person who end up fulfilling our needs and acting on God’s behalf. He performed a life example on how to live according to God’s way. The Way that is true and brings life. Then He died on our behalf to atone for humanity’s sin. But He never sinned being God, but also living as man. So when He died there was no need. So He rose from the dead and God the Father gives Him all authority. Now God says if we honor Jesus and believe that we died with Him, we are co-inheritors of Jesus’ victor. The Holy Spirit dwells in our hearts forever giving to perspective of God to do the right thing and Jesus connects us with the Father. God is our friend and guide and counselor and provider. One day Jesus will come to reign over the earth as King and restore a perfect world. Those who want to be a part of God’s world will be there and those who reject God and goodness won’t.
“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”
You're stopping early. He died on the cross but then rose on the third day and ascended into Heaven. He showed us what happens when we die if we believe in Him. He was also a break with the Old Testament (animal sacrifice, overbearing rules, etc.) and showed us what love and forgiveness means.
The idea that "Jesus died for our sins" was so nonsensical to me it kept me from considering Christianity for 40 years. Christians generally don't explain this well.
darkwinter_'s explanation is good, but I would like to add my perspective.
The spilling of Jesus's blood established a new covenant so we could be cleansed of sins through joining with the spirit of Christ rather than sacrificing animals ourselves (which was not working so well). God uses blood to establish covenants (this idea took a while for me to get used to, but God makes the rules).
God is a three part being (Godhead, Holy Spirit, Christ). Holy Spirit teaches and comforts us. Christ is the mediator. When we join with him he connects us to the heavenly realm we could not enter otherwise because of our sins.
Jesus Christ has a way of cleansing us of sin when we confess our sins to him, repent for them, ask him to take them from us, and thank him. I have felt this happen and change my life, so I can assure you it is not just a theory or weird religious belief.
My belief on this was Christ took it upon himself to redeem our souls for God.
I believe us humanity are the put on this Earth because we rebelled against God in heaven. Instead of casting them into hellfire our loving God realised some fell into rebellion very much the same way we see people that have fallen for the leftist lie.
The majority think they are doing right but there is a hardcore element that hold power of them that hate God and authority and are willing to do whatever is possible to bring as many with them to hell as possible.
So God the father and Christ the son made a world and a plan on being able to redeem people that deserve eternal peace and joy while trapping the wicked in their plan of destruction.
So Christ coming to die was the actions of a loving and obedient Son and God loved the son for carrying out his will and take the blame and sin so that others can be return back to Gods kingdom.
So Christ is now lifted high above and has become the son of God. If you read the last parts of Isaiah 53 you see where God has given Christ a higher position of status because of his obedience and service to Gods plan for us.
I believe a lot happened on the cross that allowed Jesus to become a God in his own right.
I can explain more if you want but understand this isn't in the Bible but my own thoughts and revelations from reading the Bible.

It has to do with justice.

007wannabe, it's ok to ask questions. Ask God to guide you for answers. He will!

Perhaps it was to show everyone the embodiment of good. His sacrifice is still remembered and honored 2021 years later right?
