Didnt seem to be a DDOS, didnt seem to be an attack, but was overload due to yuge traffic at around the time the 3rd presidential debate started, and lasting for a couple hrs after it finished. Sometimes there were cloudflare host down errors, sometimes host not responding errors, once when refreshing I saw a message indicating that the site was down for updates.
So it appears caused by a heavy spike in user demand. That's not a bad thing at all, and from the thread above it sounds like the team have a plan to address similar issues in future. Which undoubtedly will happen very soon - ACB confirmation, election and its fallout, a lot of big news milestones coming up fast.
Yes, have been shut out. There was a DdoS during the debate, which prompted them to re-secure the cloudflare server. Give them a few days to figure out the tweaks. Hopefully it's fixed soon.
Best summary of the situation is this post from the mods who held an impromptu Q&A type thing as the discussion progressed:

Not right now. Or, 6 hours ago.
Sometimes I have trouble accessing servers in Europe or Asia if traffic is high.
To make sure your not being blocked by ISP, try to use VPN or TOR to access the site.
I tried using tor but I cant get past the captcha page it keeps reloading even if I correctly choose the images.
I was able to connect with Tor after a few more attempts, thanks for the advice.
