I have seen plenty of death in the woods - all stages and I can tell you that these blowflies which LOVE ripe carrion are congregating in a tight mass like this because the source is pungent, rank and very concentrated for example something wafting from a vent pipe.
Also notice that someone was standing around eating sunflower seeds.
