Yes, it is life giving, when I was a Catechumen (I am a convert to the Coptic Church) I use to sit and just contemplate on what it is to take Communion, I would watch those who would go up and take it. And on the women's side (we sit males on the left females on the right in the Coptic Church) there is a verse on the iconstasis before you enter to take Communion (hard to describe the layout) but it says "He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him" John 6:56 and it would always make me tremble because truly indeed it is the Body and Blood of Christ how can you be worthy of taking such a thing?
Meanwhile, those who did not believe in transubstantiation (the literal changing of the bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ) were massacred by the Roman Catholic inquisitors.
