I think they were 2 distinct communities but I've seen a lot of people coming over from TDW that insult people here (and we're doing the same on TDW); they also tend to post things completely unrelated to this forum. And a lot of that migration happened (including myself) because I felt TDW lost its purpose and community feel by all the insults being hurled. I've had way better conversations with people here and when I ask questions or ask for help, people don't call names or throw insults.
