Do we know when exactly Jill began babysitting for them? Wife dying when Jill was 20 really doesn't mean anything to me unless she started babysitting for them the day his wife died.

Yes. She was babysitting extensively AFTER the car accident that killed the wife and daughter because both boys were severely injured, and he was still in DC during the week for his new government job.
