FYI - Internet has been back pretty solid for a little while now. I guess I was hoping for a "good reason" for it being out for a while today.
Been having issues all day. Apparently I'm not the only one. A quick search brought up many more in this area - and statement in the second link

As discussed, we've anticipated the Twitter and other social media blackouts.
Rogue agents/programmers. Per sealed Federal orders, we quickly tracked and reinstated.
Expect outages periodically (infiltrated). If this doesn't signal what I've been saying I don't know what will.

Except that a lot of internet traffic is carried on buried fiber. I've seen far worse storms, and at most, a minor hiccup or two in last few years. But, you could be right. It would just be unusual.
