Fantastic explanation by Elon--
Fun fact: The first actual documented "short position" was executed by Amschel Mayer Rothschild. He had access to military intel and learned that the british had won an important battle against the french (I forgot the year but it was centuries ago) he told everybody that the british had lost and to sell their british holdings to avoid loss. They did, and he bought up everything he could at rock bottom prices.
Napoleon was defeated then. Rothschild had quick news runners placed and was able to get the battle outcome news 22h before the news reached Britain on usual channels. It was enough to crush the markets with fake news and buy all the stock with 90% 'discount'. Next day the stock market rebounded.
