Technically, he was (almost) telling the truth.

By the time he said they didn't have a basement, they really didn't have a basement (any longer).

They filled it in, if I recall correctly.

Wouldn't it have been easier to simply ... move? Filling in a basement is a huge deal (and would require permits galore ...)
