Yeah, I know this is thread number 76 about the fire/fog early this morning in DC. Correct me if Im wrong but doesn't fog rise from the water? This screenshot at 6:30ish am DC time from airport camera 3 shows what looks to me like fog or smoke along the main part of the river but no fog/smoke over the Reagan bridge part of the river. So unless one part of the river was a shit load warmer than the other shouldn't the fog be consistent over the water?
yeah...that's not normal. we may get some fog early morning when the weather warms or cools early in the morning, but it should blanket everything, not be linear like that.
Thanks, I was starting to wonder if fog behaved differently in the USA than here in Australia :) Or if Im actually looking at 2 rivers, one warmer than the other
No your not derailing my thread, every bit helps & its on topic. Im kinda used to threads dying very quickly, sooo many new posts appearing all the time, they disappear pretty quick smart into a sea of memes etc.
Please feel free to use the above screenshot if the need arises, its time stamped at the top left. It happened in Feb, not Jan by the way :)
Are you by any chance an Aussie magpie?
?
That looks like the air quality we had over the summer on the west coast. Just not as smokey.
Where is this?
Washington DC Potomac River
Got it thanks! It looks like fog. However I just posted the White House live cam. If you look at it there’s smoke coming out of the middle of the back of the White House
yes, I know what you're referring to. Since your post I've been researching how smoke is dispersed through the air versus fog. Each move differently from the other. It's more complicated than just this simple sentence because there are many factors involved in what is fueling the fire.
What do you think? I’ve been watching live footage of DC on and off for weeks and I’ve never seen anything like this. Is it just a change in the weather?
When its foggy have you noticed one part of the river clear while the other part is foggy? Sorry, cant help myself, but in other words have you been "watching the water"?
Headed over to watch the weather forecast from DC News to see if they noted any fog over this morning or during the rest of the week ahead. All television news anchors would mention a heavy fog like that since fog is weather.
Frankly, it looks like smoke from a fire. For two reasons: 1. The wind is blowing it in one direction. 2. I don't see any fog hovering above the Potomac.
Yes & yes
Yes & Yes, also that sunrise is awfully orange.
I have seen some unusual fog conditions in my long life. I've driven through fog that would suddenly end, even if I was halfway across a long bridge.
One time I was driving in fog at night, and the bottom of the fog layer was about even with my rearview mirror. So my headlights were reflecting off the bottom of the layer. It was like I was driving through a horizontal slot. Then the fog would drop down to the hood level, and I had to slow down to a crawl.
Rivers do sometimes have different temperatures and wind conditions.
Fog is basically a very low cloud.
Looks like fog
