The Roman Republic broke down and became the Roman Empire after a series of 3 major civil wars. The American Republic will not be able to survive such convulsions unless we have some miracle.
You either have blue states with large red areas, usually smaller towns (top right map), or red states with very dense blue cities (bottom map).
The main thing that has happened is that cities have gotten more blue, and small town have gotten more red. Either way, the economies are joined at the hip.

Anyway, my point was that the problem is that states (all of them, from north dakota to california) are not red or blue, but both.
