OK, business owner here. I had a conversation about this with another business owner yesterday. Please don't take this as any endorsement for/against the vaccine, but rather a little insight into what MAY actually be the reason.
When a company has a positive test, we have an obligation to do contact tracing, blah blah blah and send people home for the requisite amount of time to make sure they aren't positive. The exception to that now is that vaccinated people do NOT have to be sent home. From an operations standpoint the fewer people I have to send home the better. The only way I can make that determination though is with proof of who got poked. In order to entice people to provide proof OP's company is offering some cash.
I can't pretend to know the intentions or politics of OP's company, but I know that the vast majority of us in small business are playing the same shitty hand we were all dealt and trying to best navigate it to survive. If that means figuring out one way or another who we theoretically don't have to pay to sit on their ass at home, then so be it.
The quarantine requirements are unlawful. We need to get back to living pre-covid style where we didn't quarantine someone for 14 days because they got the flu. We relied on their judgement to determine when they felt well enough to return and didn't require everyone who came into contact with them pre-illness to also quarantine. It needs to stop.
Totally agree. But there is a significant portion of the population who seems to enjoy this state of heightened fear, and unfortunately some of those people work for small business owners who don’t necessarily agree. We have to balance the operations needs with the employees concerns, and try to strike a system that keeps the engines of commerce turning. It sucks to have employees who are mislead, but they are still our employees. In small business we care about our people. All of them, not just the ones who we agree with.
