I spent a few years traveling on business on highways 395 /15 and the Mojave Dessert areas. There is some weird shit out there. There are roads leading into the sides of hills that just stop. Hills with massive antennas. Hollywood used this area to shoot western and outer space movies in the 50-60s,
That's wild. I'll have to poke around on Google earth. I love weird scavenger hunts. Found some pretty wild looking shit out in Australia by taking an alleged map of the DUMBS out there and then drawing in the lines and going back and forth looking for anything odd. Much like you mentioned.. roads that go to the side of mountains, general weird shit.
At the time, I thought it was strange and didn't pay much attention to it. However, now that I have been clued in on what's really going on (let me rephrase, what I think is really going on) and it makes sense now.
Driving Interstate 10 between Palm Springs and Phoenix, there is a stretch of highway that has huge concrete entrances into the sides of the hills..., can't recall mileposts, but they are there.
