I find this very odd timing. Consider this: married couples cannot testify against each other. ? ?

Married couples CAN and often DO testify against each other. It's just that under the law, a spouse cannot be COMPELLED to testify against a spouse. Of course, like everything else, the law enforcement people and DA's everywhere ignore that law and coerce spouses all the time to testify, by threatening to charge them as a co-conspirator or some other lame ass thing.
What? Have you watched Arrested Development or something?
Nah, it's just fairly common knowledge.
