The book Exo Vatican goes into this telescope a bit. Steve Quayle wrote it. He interviews Father something that works there...sorry I can't remember his name right now.

I read that, too! Very interesting.
Jesus claims heredity from Lucifer / Morning Star.
I believe we've been grossly misguided about who Lucifer is. The Latin word lucifer (uncapitalized), meaning "the morning star, the planet Venus", or, as an adjective, "light-bringing"
Considering none of the Vatican rats will ever see heaven in person, this is probably the closest they'll get.
On a mountain range that is sacred to the Apache which means the vatican paid up the wazoo to win a court case to get it built
These people think we’re stupid https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.azcentral.com/amp/72106988
Most Americans ARE incredibly stupid.
The Arizona part is understandable as AZ is one of the best states for astronomy/clear night skies (lower cloud cover, etc) on average than many other states.
The Vatican owning telescopes is nothing new -- they have long supported science and learning (yes, despite the Galileo incident which is much misunderstood).
The telescope is named Lucifer, seemingly intended as a joke (a telescope is a light bearer, after all) -- but if you ask me, that was in poor taste, as it scandalizes many folks.
Official story is there's too much light pollution in Rome for the original telescope. Still why they went all the way to Arizona is a good question.
I would say.. and the name?
This has been known for years.
And yet it doesn't stop being bizarre
