I’ve literally only watched the episode featuring Steve Pieczenik. AJ doesnt do it for me.

Did you watch the most recent one? It was nice to see Alex warming to the idea of a small secret band of military masterminds draining the swamp way ahead of the time frame he had anticipated, Alex was expecting this to happen in a decade or so, not NOW. I think Alex is sad he wasn't MORE involved than he was in exposing and taking them down.
