I have a great example of this that happened right here on GAW! The Coke Boycott.

I first remember calls for a boycott of Coke in early February, I delayed participating until March. I posted about results at the end of March:

I have stayed off of coke products since. 4 months clean! I estimate now that they're down sales of 30-ish 12 packs just 'cause of me ? Suck it, losers!

About a month after the Coke Boycott began gaining steam (many GAW and The Donald users were posting encouragement and positive results) this photo emerges on April 5th:

What to make of it? We discussed. I certainly didn't know. I thought we were boycotting Coke?

Trump is seated at his desk, WSJ open in front of him, with an obvious Coke bottle hidden behind his phone. As symbolsanon astutely pointed out recently (and flew over my head at the time) this meant Hey Coke! Call Trump. Trump didn't have the leverage to force Coke to bend the knee until we had spent a couple of months making the leverage.
