Yes, I worked for a bloodbank for years, but you need to know when you will need the blood, such as say, a planned surgery, you can cross match people you know, if they match and are willing they can give a directed donation, we would put what's called a toe tag on the blood bag with a bar code, this needs to be done within 14 days of your surgery, also an autologous donation is when you reserve your own blood in advance to have on site the day of your procedure. Ask your physician, and call your local bloodbank to set it up, they'll take it from there.
You can have your own blood drawn no closer than 2 weeks before surgery. Be sure its earmarked for your own use and follow up to be sure. You might have to go again as they can only withdraw a certain amount at a time.

Jehovah's Witness avoid all blood products, so there is a way to do it. Most surgeons seem to be aware of whatever their process is.
