There is something you need to know about most ukrainian men.

They love to hate. Anything for money and power (or more likely control). They want to be the 'boss' though rarely have the education, personality geared toward those goals. The worst ones are the nerds, no social graces, always even just sounding angry.

Also esp those from eastern Ukraine a lot of them are communist sympathizers because of the blend of russians in Ukraine. In his case he missed out on a nurturing mother and as for the father who was totally raised under communism, could have instilled the Stalinistic views on his family.

Just because Ukraine is almost free now, you have to look back into the source born under communist rule.
