any details? I've always wondered about norman lear, sidney sheldon, etc. they really shaped an entire generation of TV viewers.

Yes they did, and not for the better. The programming has been at work for quite some time and Lear has been right in the middle of it. Rob Reiner is what he is today because of the influence of Lear.
