In simple terms, Aterio Venous Malformation is a dangerous vein defect, a "wad of veins" that forms around the main artery that leads to and from the heart and the brain. The location of these AVMs can be found in in the brain and on the spine.

Most people do not discover that they have the AVM until it is too late, the AVM will eventually rupture, resulting in paralysis and/or death! Having a full body MRI scan will reveal the condition.

The best estimates for new detection of an AVM are 1 per 100,000 population per year (about 3000 new cases detected per year in the U.S.) The population prevalence is about 10 per 100,000, i.e., there are probably about 30,000 individuals in the U.S.
