He's Army Infantry and currently stationed on the border somewhere in Arizona. He was told to expect to be over there for 6-9 months by his superiors. Looks like they don't plan on this ending soon.

I was wrong, he's Army infantry. No idea why I thought he was national guard. We don't keep in touch as much as id like.
The same reason they've been deployed to Afghanistan for the last 20 years. Don't forget, NG is 3/4 the size of the Active Army and about half of all the troops deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan since 2003.
And yes, a significant number are Infantry.
