Another thing that contributed to the holocaust was that it was the first time that it openly occured. People naively believe that other humans would not be so cruel.... That is completely different this time... We know what those demons will do.
Another thing was that Europe was already basically socialist....due to having lived for centuries under theocratic rulers. So they were already "sheep" minded. Now they are dealing with freedom loving Americans who will fight to keep our freedoms

Lack of sense making in life
Widespread free-floating anxiety

When these conditions are in place, any solution that promises to take away the pain will be embraced, and people will find solidarity in the newfound community (cult) of like-minded hypnotics. When their solution (fix) is challenged they will defend it to the death, even if they know it to be wrong.
Today's population has the added problem of having been conditioned for immediate gratitude. No patience to read more than a few characters in a tweet let alone a medical study. No patience to for debate when emotional shouting is acceptable. If it's not something they can absorb in 30 seconds or less it's ignored.
