Why wouldn't they just use a real plane though? These people are sick.

My guess is that "they" needed the fleeing desparate crowd to complete the psy-op. "They" could not get both in the same shot without fakery.

In a short video of the fake plane and crowd there is one of the actors fleeing for his life who, in his exuberance expresses his glee for the camera.

We never see the plane pick up speed pulling away from the crowd while taking off.... it didn't happen.
