It's the right shape, I think. Visited Sachenhausen outside Berlin on a tour 10 yrs ago. Our guide mentioned that the fan shape design allowed fewer guards to be able to man the towers (at the narrow end) and guard more people in this shape. Gave them great visibility and and their guns had enough range to reach the entire field of "cabins" for the prisoners to simply spray the entire area if a riot or escape made. The guide said it was a model for the camps built later in other places. No one can say the German people aren't igenious as designers and planners.
