Not necessarily occult in China, but a bad omen. More like a symbol of great change and upheaval.

White Stag, IIRC, was a sign that it was tine to begin a holy quest (in Arthurian legend).

In Catholicism, it was really an Angel sent to signify that someone was holy and about to suffer greatly for their faith.
