Reading that kind of reminded me of Operation Market Garden (depicted in the movie 'A Bridge Too Far') in that communication was a problem and ground commanders lacked necessary information, or were told one thing only to discover another. The difference is that Operation Market Garden was a major undertaking with a lot of moving parts that experienced a number of failures for various reasons, whereas the Afghan withdrawal was simply bungled by people who are supposed to know better.
