The Apostle Paul was probably very familiar with Roman soldiers. They roamed the streets of Jerusalem freely. At first he was probably very friendly with them. After his Damascus road experience, he became an enemy. Rome did not like Christianity. Judaism was tolerated by Rome because it was an ancient religion. Christianity was not. Paul was even chained to a Roman soldier when he was imprisoned. So Paul's use of a Roman soldier's uniform to visualize The Armor of God was consistant with the era.
And he saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor: therefore his arm brought salvation unto him; and his righteousness, it sustained him. Isa 59:17
For he put on righteousness as a breastplate, and an helmet of salvation upon his head; and he put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a cloke. Isa 59:18
According to their deeds, accordingly he will repay, fury to his adversaries, recompence to his enemies; to the islands he will repay recompence.
