The term Generation X was coined by photographer Robert Capa in the early 1950s. He used it as a title for a photo-essay about young men and women growing up immediately after the Second World War. The 'X' refers to the unknown.

The name became popular after Douglas Coupland published his novel entitled Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture, concerning young adults during the late 1980s and their lifestyles.

After 'X', the names of Generation Y and Z (known together as Millennials) were coined sequentially. Now that we have reached the end of the alphabet, the terminology has switched to the Greek alphabet, the youngest generation (born after 2008) is called Alpha.

I think they’re calling the next generation Gen Alpha. Which if they are anything like Gen Z, then boomers and we older millennials are still the “Alphas” 😂

was just thinking about this the other day, and believe there's something to it. especially since the Bible talks about number of generations, and Q tells us to read the Bible.

Was also born at the end of Gen X and it was basically 'we had no real cohesion' as in 'Generation ___' . You had 'Depression Era' give birth to 'Greatest Generation (Served in WW2) give birth to Baby boomers (post WW2 population explosion) give birth to 'Free Love/Hippie/Vietnam' generation give birth to us. Basically we were just a lump of kids that had nothing in common but Sega vs Nintendo arguments. Y and Z is just laziness naming.

The Greatest Generation raised Boomers they raised Millennials (genY) Gen x was Raise by the Silent generation , or younger boomers. Because the last few cycles were so unstable the gap between Gen X,Y,Z is like 12-15 years or less between them rather than the traditional 20-25 between Greatest Gen and Silent.
