Yes, it is more convenient to use tape, as tape isn't as easily removed and is much easier to clean. Paper also sheds particulates like crazy, and when you're dealing with delicate equipment designed to detect volumes of nanoliters, paper is the last thing you're supposed to have in a safety hood.
Edit: If it's easier for you to believe that the 'HELP' sign is 1) a desperate plea by a supposedly enslaved lab tech in a PCR lab 2) and not a label or signifier for a High Energy Lipid Protein designated use machine, then go for it. It sounds like you've got your mind made up on the latter anyways.

I believe you. You have to admit it looks sloppy and there would be a more efficient and less time consuming way to label things.
