I understand that many hate Lincoln for squashing liberties and rolling over states rights, but I think there is a bit of divine poetry going on.
In the US, the african slaves were being deprived of their freedom and liberties ... so there is a bit of poetry in the President having to deprive the states of their freedom and liberties on account of their sins. They kinda deserved it. And I think it is a fairly consistent historical pattern where the bad behavior of the people themselves results in an overall decrease of liberty because of their ABUSE OF FREEDOM. Freely choosing sin results in the loss of that freedom. We can't be trusted with it anymore.
For example, the corruption and depravity of the Roman Senate eventually led to the loss of their freedom due to Julius Caesar and Augustus.

Slavery was already ending. It had nothing to do with the civil war.
