Not the same thing, but tonic water has always been a remedy for sickness and soar throats.

Hydroxychloroquine is the synthetic version of quinine. It has almost the same chemical structure, and is used for the same purpose. Pharmaceutical companies tend to create synthetic versions of natural substances because they can't sell a natural supplement as a pharmaceutical drug.
