Legacy dot com is used by the large "papers" to list obituaries. In the advanced search section
you can specify a date range. I chose the month of December for 3 (Chicago Trib, NYT and Boston
Herald) and the years 2017, 2020 & 2021. Entering the full month for some yielded the number "1000+
results" so I needed to divide the month (ie 12/1 thru 12/15 and then 12/16 thru 12/31) to come up
with the totals but here are the total number of obituaries:
Chicago Tribune:
December 2017 - 1,177
December 2020 - 1,082
December 2021 - 814
NYT:
December 2017 - 533
December 2020 - 507
December 2021 - 409
Boston Globe:
December 2017 - 1,244
December 2020 - 1,103
December 2021 - 983
I'm sure there's a perfectly reasonable explanation for this...
Thanks I was wondering if I was missing anything and wasn't aware these would be mixed in. I don't think they would affect the whole point of the post however? I welcome any other feedback and encourage others to look at their own local obits!
OK did a quick scan of the obituaries looking for death anniversary posts on Sundays to subtract out:
December 2017 had 5 Sundays:
NYT - 16 total
Chicago Trib - 5 total
December 2020 - 4 Sundays:
NYT - 5 total
Not going through more I think they are too minimal. There are also a smattering of obits where the person died in another state but an obituary printed in a city they spent alot of time in their life.

Were you able to separate out the "death anniversary" entries?

Sundays appear to be a popular day for them.
