There's more than one theory behind the black eye club, but this video does a good job presenting them. At the very least, black eyes are taken to signify initiation.

I've heard multiple theories on this, from a parasite inserted in the brain through the eye socket, to an adrenachrome reaction. The parasite theory has some legs dating back to Egyptian times. Strange stuff either way.
