wearing ear muffs provides limited protection
electronic ear muff are worse than no protection at all
holding up a riot shield in front of your face offers more protection
Holding up a riot shield backwards will reflect the sound waves back at the device operator

Probably doesn’t have to be a riot shield except for front line. The rest could literally hold cooking pot lids or trash can lids. Simple household devices
