One of my nerd friends is a ham. He has some sort of program on a computer that I guess he hooks the radio up to. He has been able to communicate to random people in Africa from the US. It pretty much works like text messaging.

I don’t know what program he was using but this it might’ve been something similar to what is referenced here. The title of the article might have some bearing on why these people are getting ham licenses.
