This may be a large eye opener for many. I saw this on another forum and its good context for Americans to know:
"This is going to have the effect of a natural disaster across 50% of the sporting world and the greater communities/entire countries.
For any Americans or fans of other sports reading, cricket is the only sport that could actually contend with soccer as the most popular sport in the world - it’s an order of magnitude more loved above the - still great! - very mono-centric and very popular American-focused or American-made sports, but this doesn’t mean we can’t/don’t stop using those same sports as a barometer either.
To say Warne was likely the closet thing to Cricket’s Gretzky, Jordan, et al, is still under-selling him.
Yes there are many other current events that makes this pale in comparison and that’s understood but together with the guys’s young age, his ubiquitous nature, and the way he touched so many it’s only natural for people to experience the extreme shock and grief they’re going through.
Saturday is typically the day every little kid who can plays sports gets out and plays sport, either casually or organised. They are going to remember this Saturday forever."
