25th Amendment to the Constitution states: "Whenever there is a vacancy in the office of the Vice President, the President shall nominate a Vice President who shall take office upon confirmation by a majority vote of both Houses of Congress."
So it could be anyone Biden nominates and Congress approves.
I wouldn't object to an arc on the chessboard where Biden's an actor and elects Trump "for unity". I'm thinking reality is a much harsher mistress though and we'd get Big Mike.

A POTUS would nominate a new VP in the event a VP passed or otherwise. Congress then has the task to confirm.
Probably why she has been afraid to travel.
