I live in Taiwan and have for over 20 years, Chinese want Taiwan to just hand themselves over without a fight, I know many will say that will never happen, but without going into details, invasion of the main island is unlikely.
Their sneaky move if they should choose to do it, is a loophole that not even many Taiwanese know exists. The Taiwan relations Act is what the USA use as it's guiding principle in relation to Taiwan. It only recognizes Taiwan and Pegnhu as being Taiwan, not islands like Matsu and Kinmen, theres a whole bunch of smaller islands too like the Dongsha which if China would attack, China could turn around and say "USA doesn't recognise them as a part of Taiwan, so you can't do shit.
