Its saying they would have a psychotic break. The truth is so different from their reality the foundations of their perceptions would breakdown and people would just lose it.

I can understand this. The anxiety that would be created in people when they learned that all the solid foundational knowledge the used to navigate this world was bullshit would be crippling.

I believe this is what "mutually assured destruction" is really about. The secrets are so bad now, and history is so different from what we think that dropping this information on the public could destroy countries.
