This guy is the first thief that was crucified along with Jesus. The one who mocked him, but in desperation, said save yourself - and us. Short sighted thinking - not long term salvation. It was the second thief who told him to shut up - that they had earned their punishment but that Jesus hadn't done anything to deserve what was happening to him. Is it any wonder that when the second thief asked that Jesus remember him, it was that thief to whom he said that he would be joining him in paradise?
