People make mistakes. Prison can be a place for them to contemplate their choices while protecting the public. But we owe it to ourselves and each other to allow people an opportunity to try to live a more cooperative life with others in society. Prison sentences should be reasonable. Second chances should be granted to nearly everyone.
However, repeat offenders should get harsher sentences.
Triple repeat offenders should get harsher sentences still.
I don’t know why we would give a violent, convicted felon a fourth chance at redemption.
The problem is that for every person who becomes a productive non-violent rehab. you have a bunch of new victims from the many people you gave chances to who failed to rehab...
While that is true, we also convict innocent people by accident or malice. We need to design a court / legal / penal system that is fair toward the innocent, not vindictive toward the guilty.
If a mugger gets out after a year and commits more violent crime, sign them up for five years. If they get out and commit more crime, sign them up for ten years. Once they get out of their 20s, most males calm down. If not, put them away for life.
