History continues to tell the story. The civil war was about slavery, but not 100% as most think. Leading up to 1861, the Southern states provided over 80% of the funding of the federal government. This was through tariffs on goods provided via the South. The federal government lined their pockets and provided funding for creation of the steel industry, expansion of the railroad and industrialization. Virtually none of the federal budget tariff/taxation came back to help the South. The Southern states were held in slavery to its master, the Federal Government, and received nothing in return. When the South decided they were through being slave states, they seceded. After the firing upon Fort Sumter, Lincoln’s first response was, “where am I going to get my tariff money from”. It took over two years for Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation, so freeing African slaves was not the first thing on his mind. The war started as a way for the Southern slave states to gain freedom from the tyranny of an abusive Federal government.
Now we find ourselves in 2022 and where are we. We are a collective 50 states, all held in bondage as slaves to an abusive federal government. 30 trillion dollars in debt that generations will never be able to pay-off. Look at the control of the federal government. Our founding fathers never intended for all 50 states to be held in slavery to a federal government.
Great comment! I'm a descendant of Daniel D. Tompkins and am a history buff, even though I can't write eloquently. It's great to know the good, the bad and the ugly.
Although the roots go further back, I feel that the current monster we face is strongly rooted in pre-and post-civil war industrial growth. It seems there's a point where most people turn to the dark side over money.
Daniel D. Tompkins, former Vice President, serving with James Monroe. That is quite a pedigreed background. I cannot claim a prestigious background, though my ancestors migrated in the 1700’s to the US (Germany to Charleston, S.C.). I too am a history buff.
I agree that many aspects of our Country’s current path are traceable to how our Federal government chose to allow, or in some cases hinder growth. Tariff and tax policies for over 50 years prior to the Civil War could have been addressed and possibly subverted the worst conflict in our nation’s history. The desire for governmental funding, situations leading to personal wealth (Rockeffer, Vanderbilt, etc.) as well as overall power and control over the people of our nation led us to war.
Not much has changed, the desire for control, power, wealth and greed has led us to war after war and has resulted in the loss of personal freedoms. Sorry for the meandering. I’ll have to look up Daniel Tompkins, as I must admit I am limited as to my knowledge of your ancestor.
Many people are surprised when I bring up the fact that more Germans migrated to the USA than English. Heh, heh. I brought up Daniel D. Tompkins because of his writing to the NY Legislature in support of Abolition just before going to DC, he was governor prior to being VP.
