Some people who have been previously banned appear to have been allowed to have an account again. However, would only explain why right-wing personalities might be gaining followers, and even then, not clear if it explains why this surge happened over just 1 day so far when these people have been unbanned for a few days now. You'd expect followers to be gained from this gradually over several days.
Some leftists are claiming they have deleted twitter. It's not clear if this means the app on their phone or if they actually deleted their accounts. Doubtful that very many would have done this as what is the alternative for them. In addition, you would also expect to see this over several days, not all on 1 days which we have seen as well.
My theory that Twitter engineers rolled back their algorithm to pre-May 10, 2020 version BEFORE "locking" their codebase provides a reasonable explanation for all of these changes-
It appears they unbanned a bunch of accounts equal to the amount of bots that were purged from the platform while the sale of Twitter to Musk was being finalized.
Twitter then announced it was "locking" the codebase as soon as the sale was approved. Their explanation doesn't make sense when you consider the Covid-19 and Climate Change disinformation bubbles disappeared suddenly. My explanation does make sense and explains why those disinformation bubbles disappeared.
