Hi, thanks for the reply. She is post-menopausal, and was on HRT, but they have taken her off of those, post this incident. She had two CAT scans of the brain, as well as an MRI of the brain, and all three showed no discernible sign of stroke.
I was thinking of a possible problem with hormones. Did the radiologist have any comments on the pituitary? It controls other glands. If hormones get out of balance it can cause a wide range of issues.
I once had a bad chest cold that caused me to cough really hard. Next thing I knew I couldn't lift my arm. After calling my PCP he said go straight to the ER. They were really puzzled as I had some symptoms of a stroke but not others. After 10 hours they finally admitted me and were planning on doing all kinds of test the next day. As luck would have it a neighbor of mine happened to be a neurologist and saw my name on the admittance list. He came to my room to say hi. When I told him my symptoms he said he wanted me to have an MRI of my head and neck. He thought he knew what it was and wanted to check. Sure enough it was as he expected. He said he saw it mostly in young kids and old people but generally not in middle aged people. My coughing caused me to have a bi-lateral dissection of the carotid arteries. I split the inner and outer linings of my carotids blood got between them and was pressing on a nerve that controlled my tongue which was causing some slurring of words.
It was treated by blood thinners for 3 months and instructions to not lift anything heavier than 10 pounds or strain in the bathroom. 3 months later a follow up MRI showed everything was back to normal. So strange. Luckily he figured it out. Did your wife have any colds or coughing recently before the symptoms?
Consult with an endocrinologist. Her hormones might be out of whack. Has she had a CAT scan of the brain?
