And it caused a global cooling of the sort the left longs for that resulted in loss of winter and summer crops and global famine. It is tied actually to the Irish Potato Famine, since it was too cold and wet for taters to not get moldy.
The big eruption was so bad because, like the recent Tonga event, a crack in the base let seawater in to built up a big head of steam. Even without the extra pressure it could be very destructive and cause a tsunami, but I don't see any news about it other than this..
Still remember Krakatoa, east of Java.
