The immediate, obvious damage is wasted NIH funding and wasted thinking in the field because people are using these results as a starting point for their own experiments.

What if all the scientists aren’t really bad but they have been mislead in what they assume is settled science and actually is a false starting point that only leads in small improvements, or the very long road around to discovery, or may be just a long extended dead end….misdirection in other words…
As much as pedes don't want to believe this line of thought, I think we will find, more and more, this is actually the case across many disciplines and industries.
If you tamper with the foundation, all structures will look shaky and eventually fall, even when the structure was sound and built with love or commitment.
Keep in mind, in most people's world views, they see themselves as good guys. Few people actually see themselves as bad or evil (like tiny fractions of 1 percent).
From a psychological standpoint, people must have foundational understanding with which to build their worldview, and understanding nature of life. When that foundation is challenged, that is when they get hostile.
This is why GAW is so hard for people to give in to. It isn't hard to understand, quite easy. The problem is it takes the rug out from under people, which is something most cannot even entertain the concept of, and why there will be more suicides to come. Some people just can't handle that level of upheaval in their perception of reality.
Compounded with the snowflake movement, and a whole generation has been setup for suicide when their personal MOAB moment arrives. It is tragic.

I believe you are correct in this. I’ve felt this for years about physics and mathematics. Do you remember around 20yo a bright college kid mathematician was studying a well accepted formula and he actually cracked it open to find it was flawed. Made a medium splash in the news at the time.
Nuclear power is another big one. Smaller reactors work fantastically well when you scale them properly, you dont need giant, expensive plants, you can have multiple, smaller plants providing power close by, at a fraction of the cost, with less waste. Big plant makers & energy companies wouldn't make as much, so squash it goes, along with 70mpg engines and nitrogen fuel.

Yup, remember that one.
